Habitat for Humanity Holds Open House for New Build Site

The Story County Habitat for Humanity is planning to build its 20th house at 110 Shepard Street in Gilbert, Iowa. There will be an informational Open House for all interested in this project, and in HFH in general, on Sunday, May 29 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, at the future building site. The ground blessing ceremony is scheduled for June 5.

Habitat for Humanity of Central Iowa, Inc. is a nonprofit, Christian housing ministry working in Hamilton, Hardin and Story counties. Habitat for Humanity partners with pre-qualified buyers to build houses with volunteers, and sells them at cost with no-interest mortgages to those who could not otherwise afford a home. Donations from local individuals, organizations, faith communities and businesses fund the construction of the Habitat homes. Volunteers, donors and homebuyers are welcome from all faiths or no faith.

April 6, 2005

Those spring flowers are coming up all over. In this part of the country that means construction season is upon us. Consider joining your neighbors on the construction site this spring, or consider our other events coming up that are listed below.

Construction season starts. Our first house of the year will start Saturday, April 9 in Ames. See our web site for the construction schedule and more information — and consider volunteering. www.hfhci.org. You don't even have to do construction. We've got opportunities for folks to be a site host, lead devotions or bring lunch to the construction site

Our second house will start in June in Gilbert (the 20th in Story County!), and we've got others in the works — so watch the web site for more information.

Buy a house for $500 per month or less. We are currently taking applications from folks who would like to purchase Habitat for Humanity houses in Story County. Contact our affiliate office for more information or to receive an application (info@hfhci.org, 515-232-8815). Applications are due on May 2, 2005.

We will be accepting applications for Hardin County later this year.

Please spread the word, you or someone you know might want to apply.

Tour a construction site. Do you want to learn more about Habitat for Humanity? Do you already love Habitat, and want to introduce your friends or family to it? Bring along your neighbors, service group or church friends. Come for a tour of our construction site at 5513 Kansas Ave., Ames. We have two tours scheduled:

Sunday, April 17, 2 - 3 p.m.
Sunday, May 15, 12:30 p.m.

A volunteer will lead the tour of the construction site, sharing about the need for decent housing in our community and how Habitat works. The leader will also share the stories of Habitat, what it means to the folks who build and buy Habitat houses and what it means to those who volunteer their time and treasurers.

Walk or bicycle in support of Habitat for Humanity of Central Iowa. Our 9th annual Habitour event is Saturday, June 18, 2005. Event information and registration forms are now on our web site. www.hfhci.org

Breakfast with Habitat in Hamilton County. We are busy raising awareness and funds for our first Habitat house in Hamilton County. Three breakfast fundraisers are planned for April:

April 16, 7:30-9:30 a.m., Jewell
April 23, 7:30-9:30 a.m., Stratford
April 30, 7:30-9:30 a.m., Webster City
