Fear Factor: The Marketing of Despair and Our
Power to Respond
by The Reverend Sean Parker Dennis
January 9, 2005
The Reverend Sean Parker Dennis explores the pervasive
marketing of fear in our society and asks, "But what happens when the human brain is exposed to fear and anxiety on a
daily basis? What are the consequences of playing around with fear in this
way? What does the constant stream of anxiety-producing headlines and
warnings do to us as individual and to our society? And how should we
respond?"
Sean is the pastor at the South
Valley Unitarian-Universalist Society of Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a
member of the Unitarian-Universalist
Fellowship of Ames, Iowa, before enrolling in Starr King Theological
Seminary in Berkeley, California. On January 9, 2005, he was the guest
leader at the UUFA, where he presented this sermon.

Toward a Theology of Power
by Roger Mohr
March 14, 2004
Roger Mohr begins with a reading about power from the
Tao Te Ching by Lao Tsu, a 6th Century BCE philosopher. He then speaks
about his volunteer work on a construction project using strawbales in an
intentional community. He concludes with the premise that, "The purpose of
power is to bring people together to make our lives better." We are posting
his talk because there is plenty of food for thought in it for reflecting on
issues of power in any town or community, including this little burg of
Gilbert. Roger's background includes a career in construction; however, he
is currently a student at Meadville Lombard Theological Seminary, the
Unitarian Universalist divinity school in Chicago. He also serves as
chaplain at the University of Iowa Hospitals. He presented his talk on March
14, 2004, at the Unitarian-Universalist
Fellowship of Ames.

but it showed (well at least to me) that these poor people’s lives would
worsen with a pointless war on Iraq because of cut government services." |
