Useful information and tips for preparing for a successful G125 celebration.

FRIDAY, JULY 30

5:00 p.m.

  • Re-enactment of a pre-1840s, fur trade rendezvous, including demonstration of an iron forge. Presented by Chris Haywood and Ken Arnold of rural Ames and their friends. City-owned lot northwest of water tower. (No admission fee.)

5:00 – 8:30 p.m.

  • Cemetery walks organized by the history club of the Gilbert schools. A wagon pulled by a team of draft horses will transport ticket holders from the high school a half mile north to the local cemetery. Visitors will then walk on a prescribed route among the tombstones and encounter interpreters, who will tell about their lives and roles in Gilbert history. After the drama, visitors will ride on the horse-drawn wagon back to the school for coffee and homemade pie or other dessert. A new walk starts every 40 minutes with the wagon and horses making their last departure to the cemetery at 7:00 pm. Only 200 tickets will be sold for the cemetery walk. They are available at the Consignment Gallery and City Hall on Main Street. The cost is $3.00 per person and covers the horse-drawn ride, cemetery activities, and dessert. Tickets for $1.00 are also available at the event for visitors who wish to walk to the cemetery. High school.

There is a fascinating story of how Mary Wright, a legendary postmaster in Gilbert, was concerned about the mud that country children had to walk through on their way to school and that townsfolk had to walk through on their way to the cemetery. Mary took it upon herself to raise funds for the sidewalk, which was built in 1913. Organized by the school history club. East side of the football field.

9:30 p.m. or dusk
