Gilbert is on County Highway E23 a mile west of US Highway 69 and about a half mile east of County Highway R50 (also known as George Washington Carver Avenue).
printer friendly map in PDF format People from east Ames can travel north on Grand Avenue, which is also Highway 69. About three miles north of the North Grand Mall, look for the Casey's Store and turn left (west) at the corner onto E23. Travel about a mile. Once in Gilbert, E23 becomes Mathews Drive. Go past the only stop sign and over the bumpy Union Pacific railroad tracks, then turn right (north) onto Main Street.
People from west and central Ames can also travel north on Stange Road then turn left (west) onto G.W. Carver, which will curve north. Follow Carver (R50) about three miles north to the stop sign and turn right onto E23. Travel a half mile east. Once in Gilbert, E23 becomes Mathews Drive. Turn left just before the railroad crossing onto Main Street.
Travelers from counties to the northwest can travel south on Iowa Highway 17 to the corner of E18 where there is a communications tower and dish. Turn left (east) for a few miles, then turn right (south) on R38. Then go south a few more miles and turn left (east) on E23. Go a couple miles east, and you'll be on Mathews Drive in Gilbert. Turn left just before the railroad crossing onto Main Street.
Travelers from Interstate 35 can choose from four exits. There is Exit 111 for US Highway 30 or Exit 113 for 13th Street. Travel into Ames and find Grand Avenue. Then turn right (north). Grand Avenue is also Highway 69. About three miles north of the North Grand Mall, look for the Casey's Store and turn left (west) at the corner onto E23. Once in Gilbert, E23 becomes Mathews Drive. Travelers from I35 can also take exit 123 and head east on County Highway E18. When it intersects with Highway 69, turn left (south) and go a few miles to the Casey's corner. Turn left (west) onto E23. Travel about a mile. Once in Gilbert, E23 becomes Mathews Drive. Go past the only stop sign and over the bumpy railroad tracks, then turn right (north) onto Main Street. . If you get lost, in spite of these fine instructions, look for the Gilbert watertower.
