There are many private and public agencies available to help youth and families. The following are some frequently used local agencies and their telephone numbers. (This listing obtained from the Gilbert Community Schools which published the material in its district newsletter in the fall of 2003.)

ASSAULT CARE EXTENDING SHELTER AND SUPPORT (ACCESS): 232-2303 OR 1-800-203-3488.  Is a 24 hour crisis line offering services to any woman who has been emotionally, physically, or sexually assaulted.

ALATEEN: 233-6312.  Provides support for teenagers whose lives are affected by alcohol or drug abuse of a parent, close friend, or relative.

AL-ANON: 233-6312.  Provides fellowship and support for relatives and friends of alcoholics.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS: 232-8642.  A fellowship of men and women who share their experiences to help solve problems related to alcohol and drug abuse.  Office opens at 12:00 noon.

BIRTHRIGHT, INC. AMES: 292-8414.  An emergency pregnancy service offering positive alternatives to abortion.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES: 232-7421.  Offers individual, married couples, pregnancy and family counseling.

CENTER FOR ADDICTION RECOVERY: 232-3206.  Evaluation and assessment, individual and group counseling for alcohol and/or group counseling for alcohol and/or drug abusers and/or concerned persons.

CENTER FOR CHILDCARE RESOURCES: 294-8833.  Enables parents access to childcare availability in Boone, Story and some surrounding communities.

CENTER FOR CREATIVE JUSTICE: 292-3820.  Is a mediation program that provides a comfortable setting in which neutral, trained mediators help the disputing parties work toward an agreement acceptable to both. Could include domestic problems, small claims, landlord/tenant disputes, juvenile problems, etc.

CHILD, ADOLSCENT, AND ADULT PSYCHIATRY ? 292-3023.  Dr. Gregory Barclay has expertise in:  adoption issues, anger control, ADHD, depression, obsessive compulsive behavior, oppositional defiant behavior, teen substance abuse, tic disorders and Tourette?s Syndrome

CHILD ABUSE HOTLINE: 1-800-652-9516.  24-hour service for reporting incidents of child abuse and/or neglect.

CLINICAL ASSOCIATES OF AMES: 292-2703.  Private, independent practice specializing in adolescent and family therapy.  Services can include:  individual, family and couple therapy, custody evaluations, substance abuse counseling, sexual abuse issues.

COUNSELING CENTER OF CENTRAL IOWA ? 241-2300.  Provides mental health treatment and consultation for children and adults.  One-on-one counseling for such disorrders as ADD, ADHD, chemical dependency and eating disorders.

CRISIS  LINE: 233-2330.  Provides immediate counseling and crisis intervention.  Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Operates out of YSS Rosedale Shelter.

CROSSROADS COUNSELING/CONSULTING: 292-1813.  Offers services mainly in the area of family counseling.

DOMESTIC ABUSE: 1-800-942-0333.  Provides counseling and referrals to local shelters and agencies.  24-hour.

FAMILY HOUSE: 233-2250.  Youth & Shelter Services agency provides short and long-term individual and family counseling.  Also is licensed for substance abuse assessments and counseling on a sliding fee scale.

GERARD TREATMENT CENTER: 292-5174.  Help with mental health, youth, and family problems.

HELP CENTRAL INFORMATION & REFERRAL: 1-800-723-0614 or 232-0000.  A program of the Story County American Red Cross, it provides information about community human and social services.

HOPE CLINIC: 232-1998.  A psychiatric and counseling service for people of all ages.  Includes psychiatric assessments, treatments, and medication management.  Specialize in assessment of ADHD, learning disabilities and other adolescent issues.

IOWA AIDS HOTLINE: 1-800-445-2437.  AIDS information, referral for testing, legal and medical support groups and peer counseling.

IOWA DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES: 292-2035 (Story County); 432-6387(Boone County). Provides  protective services to abused, neglected, dependent children.  Also provides financial and medical assistance to families who qualify based on income and asset guidelines.

IOWA LUTHERAN HOSPITAL EATING DISORDERS UNIT:
263-5672.  Is a hotline answered 24 hours a day.   Provides assessment and therapy for all forms of eating disorders.

IOWA WORK FORCE DEVELOPMENT CENTER: 232-6572.  Helps people by locating opportunities for employment.

LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF STORY COUNTY: 382-2471.  Legal help for individuals that are at or below the federal poverty level.

LUTHERAN SOCIAL SERVICES OF IOWA/BELOIT: 232-7262.  Residential and out-patient therapy for emotionally disturbed youth.

MID-IOWA COMMUNITY ACTION (MICA): 296-2736.  help is offered to low income families in the form of emergency food, energy assistance, etc.

NATIONAL RUNAWAY HOTLINE: 1-800-621-4000.  Referral service for teens and parents; available 24 hours/day

PARENT TRAINING AND INFORMATION CENTER OF IOWA:
800-450-8667.  Support and training for parents as well as information and referrals

PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF MID-IOWA: 292-1000.  Provides services to men and women. Pregnancy testing is available.  Counseling is provided concerning birth control methods, pregnancy terminations, etc.

RICHMOND CENTER (CENTRAL IOWA MENTAL HEALTH):
232-5811.  Provides mental health treatment and consultation services on a sliding fee scale for residents of Story, Boone and Greene Counties.

STORY COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES:
382-7290 (Boone County-433-0593). Short term relief and one-time financial assistance available in  the form of shelter, utilities, food and emergency pre-authorized medical payments.

STORY COUNTY JUVENILE COURT:  233-3346. Officers supervise juveniles on probation, help individuals and families identify needs, make appropriate referrals of juveniles to their community agencies, provide crisis intervention, etc.

SUICIDE CRISIS LINE: 513-223-4777.  Suicide prevention center.  Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

TEENLINE(HEALTH ISSUES): 1-800-443-8336.  Free answers to health questions as well as brief counseling services.

YOUTH LAW HOTLINE: 1-800-728-1172.  For young people under 18 wanting to obtain free and confidential legal advice, information and referrals.

YSS-YOUNG PARENTS CENTER: 232-0066.  Teen parent support groups, shelter services and classes.
