1. What do you see as being the main issues facing
the Gilbert Community School District?
In my opinion, the main issue confronting the school board in the next
few years will be the increase in enrollment and the need for additional
space to accommodate this increase. It is important to keep the current
quality and class size.
2. What experiences, attributes, or other factors
from your background would help make you a good school board member?
I graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Elementary
Education. After graduating, I taught in Des Moines for two years as a 4th
and 6th grade teacher. Then I spent the next six years teaching 3rd grade in
Omaha, NE. While teaching in Omaha, I was highly involved in curriculum
development and starting an enrichment based summer school program. It
turned out to be very successful and I truly enjoyed the challenge. After my
eight years of teaching, I became a stay at home mom and have enjoyed that
experience for the last six years.
3. Why are you running for the school board?
I am running for the school board position because I believe that a
successful school requires parents that are willing to get involved and take
interest in their children's education. My daughter started kindergarten
this year and my son will be in kindergarten next year. Therefore, I feel it
is important to get involved now. As both a parent and a former teacher, I
bring experience from both perspectives to the school board.
4. What kind of time commitment and other
involvement do you see yourself making to the school district during your
term as a board member?
I plan on committing the necessary amount of time it takes to do a good
job. Above and beyond my commitment to the school board, I plan to volunteer
time in the classroom and other school activities.
5. If in five years from now, a motion picture or
novel were written about your role as a board member, what would you want
the title of the film or book to be?
Hard Work Pays Off
6. What adjectives would you use to describe the
Gilbert schools as they are now?
Quality, personal, dedicated, yet undersized
7. In five years from now, what adjectives would
you like people to use to describe the Gilbert schools?
Quality, personal, dedicated, comfortable (appropriate size) and
progressive
8. It's been said that being a school board member
is a tough job because the primary work of a school involves children, and
people have emotional attachments to children that can influence judgment
and decision-making. How do you see yourself working in that kind of
situation where you (or visitors to board meetings) have emotions related to
a decision that needs to be made and yet there needs to be sufficient
detachment to make a fair decision?
Every situation is unique and it is important to keep an open mind with
whatever may be the issue at hand. I think it is important to make an
informed decision based on the facts from the administration, teachers and
parents involved.
9. In addition to tending to the wide range of
business and major issues that come before the school board, do you also
have a pet idea or two for which you would like be the catalyst to see
happen in the school district? Please give a brief description of the idea
or ideas.
My emphasis will be on the general issues of the school. However, I would
like to see the school investigate the possibility of offering a summer
enrichment program.
10.What else would you want voters to know about
yourself? (The answers can be either serious or light-hearted. A little
humor never hurt any situation.)
I am as far from being a politician as anyone can get. I have one goal,
and that is to do a good job for the students of Gilbert.
