8. It's been said that being a school board member is
a tough job because the primary work of a school involves children, and
people have emotional attachments to children that can influence judgment
and decision-making. How do you see yourself working in that kind of
situation where you (or visitors to board meetings) have emotions related to
a decision that needs to be made and yet there needs to be sufficient
detachment to make a fair decision?

As much as I would like, you cannot please everyone all the time. Plus 5
heads are better than 1.

Every situation is unique and it is important to keep an open mind
with whatever may be the issue at hand. I think it is important to make an
informed decision based on the facts from the administration, teachers and
parents involved.

I believe I would work just fine in this situation. I believe I would be
described as being very fair in my current work environment where I need to
make decisions about people I supervise. I believe in all situations it is
important to hear all sides of the issues and then make a decision that is
sound based on the facts and after reviewing with the other board members.

My past history of board leadership has demonstrated that I can take a
principled approach to complicated and emotional issues. My base value is
that the best interests of all students are met with continuity and
consistency of policy implementation as a primary expectation.

You have to gather all other facts and be as objective as possible. Listen.
Think. React. Look at the issues. Weigh the various outcomes. Make a wise
decision. When there are opposing viewpoints, you are not going to make all
involved happy.
