1. What do you see as being the main issues facing
the Gilbert Community School District?
One of the main issues I see facing the Gilbert schools in the upcoming
years is how to handle the growth of the number of students attending the
school here and maintaining the quality of education they are getting by
maintaining optimal class sizes. Certainly we will need to look at the
options necessary to achieve this. One of these would be evaluating whether
constructing an additional building for the school is feasible from a
financial stand point. I feel we also need to maintain the best possible
administration through this time of growth and that this will need to be a
priority.
2. What experiences, attributes, or other factors
from your background would help make you a good school board member?
I believe the reasons I would be a good school board member are these. I
have a sincere interest in education and a desire to help make the Gilbert
School District the best it can be. This in combination with a sound
business sense that I have gained from my education as well as my work
experience will help me. My own education was a very positive experience
having grown up here in central Iowa. I also participated in athletics in
both high school and college. My education is in Business Administration and
Economics, having graduated from Waldorf Jr. College and Wartburg College. I
am a District Manager for Coach House Gifts and supervise stores in the Iowa
and Nebraska area. I am involved with personnel issues, meeting budgets,
etc.
3. Why are you running for the school board?
I am running for the school board because I’d like to help the school
through this time of growth. I am wanting to serve the community (parents
and students) in working with the administration to help in maintaining the
quality education it provides.
4. What kind of time commitment and other
involvement do you see yourself making to the school district during your
term as a board member?
I am committed to making the time necessary to fulfill the position of
school board member. My wife and I have 2 elementary aged children and we
will certainly be involved in volunteering whenever possible.
5. If in five years from now, a motion picture or
novel were written about your role as a board member, what would you want
the title of the film or book to be?
A Positive Influence for the School
6. What adjectives would you use to describe the
Gilbert schools as they are now?
Competent, sound, well-rounded, positive
7. In five years from now, what adjectives would
you like people to use to describe the Gilbert schools?
Insightful, well planned, competent, sound, well-rounded, positive.
8. It's been said that being a school board member
is a tough job because the primary work of a school involves children, and
people have emotional attachments to children that can influence judgment
and decision-making. How do you see yourself working in that kind of
situation where you (or visitors to board meetings) have emotions related to
a decision that needs to be made and yet there needs to be sufficient
detachment to make a fair decision?
I believe I would work just fine in this situation. I believe I would be
described as being very fair in my current work environment where I need to
make decisions about people I supervise. I believe in all situations it is
important to hear all sides of the issues and then make a decision that is
sound based on the facts and after reviewing with the other board members.
9. In addition to tending to the wide range of
business and major issues that come before the school board, do you also
have a pet idea or two for which you would like be the catalyst to see
happen in the school district? Please give a brief description of the idea
or ideas.
I don’t have any pet ideas or personal agenda in running for the school
board other than to serve the community.
10.What else would you want voters to know about
yourself? (The answers can be either serious or light-hearted. A little
humor never hurt any situation.)
I will do the best job I can and will be very approachable to the parents,
students, faculty, and administration in the school district.
